Rufo Quintavalle and Alan May

I want to highlight two poets with short poem formats: Rufo Quintavalle and Alan May.

Quintavalle has an excellent poem "Milosz in California" here at Eyewear and here at Diagram issue 10.6, I especially like his "by the sea" series of poems.

The first has a great ending--and the whole second series is great. The progression is excellent in both. The "by the sea" is much more modern than I usually go for, but he created good work in a difficult medium.

Here's an excerpt from the "by the sea" work:

the burning sand
like glass is damp
and silver:  [...]

And from another one:

   silver

                                                       eyes: a mouth
      grape flesh; [...]

Alan May has a great poem here at Diagram issue 10.5, called "Biography of Don Knotts". It's one of the good examples of a desert poem, and is almost symbolist. The ending is great, and I usually don't even like endings that 'say' something, but he nailed this poem.
