Mary Renault was an incredible fiction writer on ancient Greece--if you like Alexander the Great, Theseus, Plato and the rest, be sure to check her out. She really blends common sense with ancient beliefs, so you can see how and why traditions were upheld. Her Theseus series is extraordinary.
She interprets the myth of the minotaur in a great way, and the whole thing is so interesting--it's so intense, unlike the often dry recitals of ancient myth. It took me a while to realize that this Theseus was actually the famous one, just because she makes it so realistic and believable.
Her Theseus books are: The King Must Die and The Bull from the Sea. Do try both, they're worth it. If it becomes too slow for you, be assured that action will be coming, it's lurking surprisingly around strange corners.
If you like reading about the ancients, especially the Minoans at Knossos, the bull leapers, Hippolyta and Phaedra, be sure to try these.
