Eerie fiction

Sometimes chill, scary atmospheres can be just the ticket, in the heat of summer especially. There's Night Film here, House of Leaves here, M.R. James scary short stories [he was truly a master, exceptional but read slowly through his old time style] and Hawthorne's as well, Lovecraft, Poe,  and Now you see them, now you don't for more simple, short YA tales [but no less scary].

I do not like Henry James's Turn of the Screw or the other Victorian horror stories, myself. They are too totally nihilistic, I don't enjoy that type of tone of pure evil. I did like that film The Others a little bit though--don't tell anyone! The Ring [the American one] was okay too, especially for the atmosphere.

Reading about Etruscan cave tombs can work too here, they are crazy interesting and terrifying. In real life, the chills never leave you--so if you're going to Italy, don't miss them.
