C.P. Cavafy

C.P. Cavafy [1863-1933] is a famous Greek poet, born in Egypt, who has some great work. His poem "Craftsman of Wine Bowls" here, translated by Avi Sharon, is a great look at ancient northern style poetry [in two columns]; there is more info and poems here [a ton] and here

His poem "Footfalls" here, translated by André Michalopoulos is incredible, here's the opening:

In the ebony bed crowned with coral eagles
Nero sleepes sensual, calm and blissful,
In the bloom of the body's strength
And the lovely vigor of his youth.
[...]

Here's an excerpt from "Craftsman of Wine Bowls", very ancient Greek in feeling:

On this wine bowl                   of pure silver— 
destined for the home                 of Heracleides, 
where discerning taste                 and elegance reside— 
I've engraved flowers,                 streams and thyme, 
and in their midst                  a handsome youth, 
naked and erotic,                   dangling his leg 
in the water still. [...]
