One book I want to talk about is The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. While I am not into books about extreme violence and terror, I do like that the series has characters that are already on their own paths, speeding down hills [especially female ones]. The book has some flaws, mostly that it drags and drags at different points, but it still succeeds because of its strengths.
A perfect counterpoint to the series is The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency set. While the books have some good ideas, they are so at peace and calm that there's no tension. Take Nero Wolfe as a contrast. While it's not hard boiled cliches, it's not still waters either--Archie is constantly doing something, striving against Wolfe or out in the streets. There is always a frisson of action in the air, even just in the characters's hearts.
That's what I like to see.
