Edward Smallfield and Miriam Pirone

Today I want to highlight Edward Smallfield and Miriam Pirone's work called "from orange" in Alice Blue Reivew issue six here. It's incredible, a beautiful piece. His orange trees and summer vibe are calmly laid out, with a great relaxed pace. It's like you're lying on a hammock, half asleep.

The sparse language is great without being overwhelming, or without color at all--it has a good balance. I liked the opening and ending lines:

3.

                                 in a blind      dress
                                             on an August
                                                                       a peach [...]
                             too much brightness

I also like Smallfield's poem "after Niedecker 4" in Omniverse here. It's a great look at a poem that can encapsulate something--in this case, you can look at it as a summer night. Many people have lilac trees, and you can smell them in the air, barefoot, while appreciating your cool white pillow. I love his ending:

water , summer
          (the hot) shore
Good-bye to lilacs by the door
