Dennis Brutus

I want to highlight South African poet Dennis Brutus for his poem "Sequence for South Africa", it's really beautiful. I saw it here at A United Nations of Poetry. His poem "I am the tree..." here is also good, it takes a single idea and works at it endlessly, to great effect.

This poem has a great mix of feeling, concept and nature; it's great. Here's an excerpt:

1.

Golden oaks and jacarandas
flowering:
exquisite images
to wrench my heart.

[...]

4.

At night
to put myself to sleep
I play alphabet games
but something reminds me of you
and I cry out
and am wakened.
